A Tuscan weekend with Brunello and trufflesA fully guided tour
Friday
You will be met off your flight and transferred to the Hotel
Dei Capitani in the famous village of Montalcino, overlooking
the spectacular Crete Senese (clay hills of Siena) and known
all over the world for its production of Brunello wine. Your
dinner, of local specialties, will include a tasting of 3
different vintages of Brunello di Montalcino.
Saturday
This morning we will have time for a guided visit of Montalcino, the refuge of Sienese nobles when the Florentines finally conquered the territory, and discover its lovely winding streets and lanes. We will also visit a well-known wine cellar and enjoy a tasting. After you have taken lunch at one of the many superb restaurants, a short drive will bring us to San Giovanni d'Asso for a lesson on truffle hunting Italian style.
This
afternoon we will learn how the modern Italians now use dogs
(instead of pigs!) to hunt for truffles on a walk through
a local tartufaia. We will learn about the natural history
of the territory and begin to understand why the full-bodied
local wines are in perfect harmony with the stronger tastes
of the regional cuisine. After the lesson we will return to
San Giovanni and taste other local products, and then dine
on a menu based on truffles.
Sunday
After a leisurely breakfast we will transfer to San Gimignano, the world-famous city of medieval towers. We will visit the town and lunch together in a charming trattoria, before continuing on to the airport for your return flight.
